역사

1636년 메사추세츠 주의회에 의해 설립되었으며 처음 후원자의 이름 (John Harvard)을 따서 이름지어진 하버드는 미국에서 가장 오래된 대학교이다. 처음 하버드는 회중교(Congregation­alist) 와 유니테리언 (Unitarian) 성직자 교육으로 시작하였고, 18세기 부터 일반 대학으로 바뀌기 시작했고, 그리고 19세기에 보스턴의 유명 대학의 중심으로 자리잡았다. 미국 남북 전쟁 (American Civil War) 후에 하버드는 최신 기술을 연구하는 대학으로 바뀌었다 (1869-1909). 대공항과 세계 제 2차 대전 후에 하버드는 학제를 개편하고 입학 전형을 자유화 하였다. 1977년 래드클리프 대학 (Radcliffe College) 을 합병하며 남녀 공학이 되었다.
